Last night, I was in the process of building a wine rack that my wife had purchased recently. It was all going well until I reached the point where I had to nail the backing to the rest of the rack. I realized I had not grabbed the hammer when I had grabbed the screwdriver, so I went to retrieve it, only to realize it wasn't there. I searched all over the house to no avail. I could not find it.
I found out this morning, after speaking with my wife, that she thought she may have left it in the chicken coop. I went out there, and, sure enough, there it was. Nothing drives me crazy like looking for something where it should be and not finding it there.
I try to be as organized as possible. When I need something, I want to know where it is and be able to go straight to it, without having to look around first. My Magic collection consists of over 40,000 cards. They are all sorted and alphabetized. When I need a card, I know exactly where to go to find it. My Magic collection is easy to keep organized though, because I'm the only one who ever accesses it. I know everything stays where it should be.
This is not the case with general purpose items in my house, but it is something I am trying to control. Most of the time, it's not a big deal. Items tend to be where they are supposed to be, or at least near enough that they are easily found. However, sometimes things tend to go missing. As a result, they end up in new homes temporarily before moving again.
I'm going to spend the next few weeks correcting this issue. My goal is to ogranize my whole house, making sure everything has a place and everything is in its place. I want to know that when I need the hammer, the hammer is where it is supposed to be. This is not going to be a small task, because we have a lot of stuff. However, it must be done for my continuing sanity.

Please just don't let the need for order dominate too much of your life. I'm an everything in its place kind of person & your father-in-law definitely is not. I've had to relax & let things flow a lot. Your wife is genetically wired for chaos. Good luck
ReplyDeleteI KNEW WHERE THE HAMMER WAS. That's where it belonged. :)
