Fitness

So I've made it to Day 2 of this blog and so far so good. I know it is going to be a challenge at some point, but I know I'm up to it. For today's post, I'm going to talk about something personal as well as lay out my other major goal for 2014 in addtion to this blog.

For the greater majority of my life, I have been overweight. Unti now, it is has never bothered me all that much. Most of my hobbies don't really require a physical component, so it wasn't an issue. I have lived a pretty sedimentary lifestyle. I even sit down most of the day at my job.

However, I have since had a change in mindset. I'm not getting any younger, and the risks of being overweight and an unhealthy lifestyle start to become more real the older you get. I plan on living for a very long time, but I need to make sure I take the steps to ensure that I do.

Honestly, I have a second reason for this newfound focus on my health. I am a competitive Magic: the Gathering player, which I'm sure I will expand upon in future blog posts. As with most card games, Magic is a mental game and not a physical one, so being overweight or out of shape has never really had an impact on me in the that regard. At least, I never really thought it did. Recently, though, I've starting reading a lot of articles by a professional Magic player who is also a basketball coach. He makes some really good points linking physical fitness to mental fitness. Even though Magic is not a physical game, our physical well being can affect our mental abilities as well and have a negative impact on our gameplay.

Because of this, I have decided to really focus on my health, specifically my weight, in 2014. I have already started in the last couple of months. I have been trying to eat better and was exercising on a regular basis. Unfortunately, I did fall out of habit a little with the holidays. But I will be making it a much bigger focus going forward and get back to working out.

As with my writing and game design goals, I will also be using this blog as a way to hold myself accountable for my weight loss by occassionally posting updates on here. My ultimate goal is to lose 100 lbs by the end of the year. I would like to hit this goal well before then, but I understand the importance of setting reasonable and attainable goals. If I do hit it before the end of the year, then that would just be a bonus.

I encourage all of you who read this to join me in this goal as well. Use 2014 as the year where you will really start to focus on your health, if you haven't been doing so before now. Even something as simple as watching what you eat can have a huge impact. Hopefully, my successes will help motivate others.
